Summer Cleaning Guide: How to Clean Window & Patio Door Tracks

When people think about summer cleaning, they often focus on washing the windows. But one of the most overlooked areas in the home is the window and patio door tracks.

At Lemon Fresh Cleaning, this is actually one of the most common areas we clean during move-out cleans. It's amazing how much dirt, dust, bugs, pet hair and debris can build up over the years—especially in homes where the windows are open throughout the summer.

The good news is that with a few basic tools and a little patience, you can make a huge difference.

What You'll Need to Clean Window Tracks

Before you begin, gather a few simple supplies:

• A bucket of hot, soapy water

• A small cleaning brush, such as an old toothbrush or detailing brush

• A large microfiber or cleaning cloth

• A vacuum with a crevice attachment (recommended)

  
  

The small brush is the real hero here. It allows you to scrub into all the corners and tight crevices where years of dirt and debris like to hide.

Step 1: Vacuum the Loose Debris

Before adding any water, use your vacuum's crevice attachment to remove as much loose debris as possible.

You'll likely pick up things like:

• Dust

• Dead bugs

• Leaves

• Pet hair

• Pollen

• Small rocks and dirt

Removing the loose debris first makes the rest of the job much easier and prevents you from simply turning dry dirt into muddy sludge.

Don't worry if you don't have a crevice attachment. You can still loosen the debris with your small brush and wipe it away with a dry cloth before moving on.

Step 2: See if the Sliding Window Can Be Removed

Many sliding windows can be removed, making it much easier to clean the entire track.

In many homes around Cochrane, you can remove the sliding portion by:

1. Open the window.

2. Place one hand on each side of the sliding window.

3. Gently lift the window upward into the upper track.

4. While it's lifted, pull the bottom of the window toward you.

5. The bottom should clear the lower track, allowing the window to come out.

Once you're finished cleaning, simply reverse the process to reinstall the window.

A quick note: Not every window is designed to come out this way. While this is fairly standard in many homes around Cochrane, some windows have different mechanisms or aren't meant to be removed. If your window doesn't lift easily, don't force it. You can still clean the tracks very effectively with the window in place.

Step 3: Add a Small Amount of Hot, Soapy Water

Pour a small amount of hot, soapy water directly into the track.

It may feel wrong, but window and patio door tracks are designed with small drainage holes that allow water to drain outside. As long as you aren't flooding the track with excessive water, everything will drain as intended.

The warm water helps loosen built-up dirt, making it much easier to scrub everything clean.

Step 4: Scrub Every Corner and Crevice

Using your small brush, scrub every corner, groove and channel in the track.

Pay close attention to the corners where dirt tends to pack in over time.

As you scrub, add a little more clean water every so often to help flush the loosened debris toward the drainage holes.

Don't be surprised if you need to repeat this process several times. Window tracks that haven't been cleaned in years often require a few rounds before they're completely clean.

Step 5: Wipe Away the Dirty Water

If larger debris isn't flushing out easily, use your microfiber cloth to soak up the dirty water along with the loosened dirt and debris.

Rinse the cloth, wring it out, and repeat the process as needed.

Alternate between scrubbing, adding a little fresh water, and wiping until you're happy with the results.

Step 6: Clean the Window Screens

While you've got everything apart, it's the perfect time to clean your window screens.

If they're removable, carefully pop them out and rinse them with a garden hose or wash them in the bathtub.

Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling them.

Removing the dust and pollen trapped in your screens can make a noticeable difference, especially during allergy season.

Step 7: Reinstall the Window

If you removed the sliding window, simply reverse the removal process.

Lift the window into the upper track first, then lower the bottom back into place.

Slide the window back and forth a few times to make sure it's sitting properly and moving smoothly.

Window and patio door tracks are one of those areas that many homeowners don't think about until they become noticeably dirty.

In fact, they're one of the most common items we clean during move-out cleans because the buildup can be unbelievable after years of dust, bugs, pet hair and everyday use.

Cleaning them once or twice each summer helps keep your windows operating smoothly and leaves your home feeling noticeably fresher.
